The Company manages a fleet of modern vessels of high quality and standards of construction fitted with equipment matching the level of internationally recognised safety rules and regulations.

We are committed to provide world-class ship management services that meet all safety, environmental and customer requirements and to conduct such operations in a manner which protects human life, safeguards health and safety, and respects the environment.

Ensure shore staff and seagoing personnel commitment to safety, quality and environmental excellence through constant improvement of their safety management skills and competence by promoting training, familiarization and drills.
Implement, maintain and communicate this policy to all company employees and other interested parties.
Recognise that Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Protection issues are essential in order to achieve the company objectives.
Establish, promote, monitor and review Safety, Quality and Environmental objectives in order to put this policy into effect.
Ensure compliance with mandatory rules and regulations and that applicable codes, guidelines and standards recommended by the IMO, relevant Flag Administrations, Classification Societies and Maritime industry organisations are taken into account.
Fulfill all contractual requirements as defined by the relevant Ship Management Agreements and Charter Parties. Quality is a key issue for our company.
Provide adequate resources to promote this policy.
Establish safeguards against all identified risks to Life, Health, Property and the prevention of Pollution.
Promote safe, healthy and environmentally friendly practices and a safe working environment.
Be alert and prepared for emergencies.

We aim to achieve the goals of zero accidents and zero spills at sea through continuous improvement.

Good management system performance is fundamental to our company vision of long term success and is therefore an integral part of our business plans. System responsibilities extend throughout the organisation from the Managing Director downwards. Everyone is expected to take a personal, active and constructive role in the drive for flawless, efficient, competitive and customer focused operations.

In the following policy statements, the overall intention and the direction of the company related to SMS issues, are set out. The company, by defining and implementing this policy, aims to:

  •  Prevent unsafe acts, personal injury, damage to property and the environment.
  • Recognise that health, safety, quality and environment protection are line management responsibilities and are essential in order to achieve our operating objectives.
  • Develop a sense of personal responsibility and create interest and enthusiasm with respect to health, safety, continuous improvement and environment protection.
  • Ensure that personnel assigned to the various tasks are appropriately experienced and trained in that task and engage those more experienced to share their knowledge with less experienced personnel.
  • Policies are posted in prominent positions on board each vessel and at the Head Office.
  • Policies are revised periodically in order to ensure that the goals set forth, are achieved and to monitor the correctness and effectiveness of the procedures and guidelines given.
  • Policies are reviewed at least annually during the Management Review Committee meeting.

COMPANY OBJECTIVES

Our objectives arise from our SMS. The company objectives have been established by the Management during the initial planning of the SMS. These objectives, as described below, are monitored for adequacy and may be revised:

  • To protect all personnel from avoidable injury, damage to health and hardship– zero incidents.
  • To undertake all duties safely and to protect the environment – zero oil spills.
  • To demonstrate safety records that the business is being operated responsibly.
  • To show that safe operations form an essential element of efficient operations.
  • To maintain the highest technical, operational and health standards for the ship.
  • To prevent avoidable incidents that may cause injury, hardship or damage to the environment.
  • To provide quality services.

For accomplishing the above objectives:

  • The Company has developed and established a SMS which promotes the concept of safety and environmental excellence, continuous improvement and enhancement of personnel skills.
  • The International and National legislation is complied with, and decisions of the international shipping community are taken into account.
  • Changes that can affect the integrity of Company operations are evaluated and appropriate measures are taken to ensure that risk to life, property and the environment is either reduced or maintained at a statistically acceptable level.
  • Every member of the shore or ship personnel is familiar with the requirements of the SMS, evaluates the effectiveness of the system and duly informs his manager, or the Master and the DPA of any observed malfunctions and makes suggestions for improvement.
  • The company ensures the hiring of properly qualified personnel. The personnel undergoes training both immediately upon hiring and continuously during their employment.
  • All necessary measures are taken for the prevention of accidents. The Head of each department, the Masters and all personnel, support this policy by the timely implementation of all necessary corrective and preventive actions.
  • An unexpected event which contains threat to life, property or the environment or adversely affects the satisfaction of the customers is evaluated and actions are taken to prevent recurrence.
  • All personnel is obliged to take part in the scheduled drills on matters of safety and environmental Policy. The drills are scheduled and their results are evaluated.
  • The voyage, the loading of cargo and the shipborne operations are well planned, in order to foresee possible dangers and take the necessary precautions.
  • Effective maintenance and inspection procedures are established and implemented in order to prevent unexpected and costly defects.
  • Suppliers, service providers and contractual partners, perform in a manner that is consistent with the company policies and objectives.

The prime responsibility for implementing this policy lies with line management. The commitment and involvement of all Company personnel is required.

POLICY IMPLEMENTATION

The policy statement contains the long term goals and aspirations, such as zero incidents, zero pollution, zero spills to sea etc., which are obtained through the following model:

Plan: Effective strategies require clarity in policies, purpose, process, roles and responsibilities. The company goal is to conduct business based on the principle of safety and environmental excellence.
Act: Consistent implementation of plans is monitored, for effective execution of the work.

Improvements can be achieved through clear communication of the guidelines, prioritisation and targeting of processes, clear definition of objectives and measurements, followed by actual work towards each objective. The emphasis is, on achieving optimum long-term efficiencies, rather than short-term expediencies. Once a plan for improvement is agreed between an individual or team and their Manager, actual implementation work begins.

Measure: Sustainable improvement, safety and environmental excellence requires mechanisms to check, evaluate and provide feedback information on achieved results . The measure segment of the cycle provides information to all appropriate personnel on the results of their alignment, implementation and improvement efforts.
Improve: The organisation compares the identified processes with its technical and operational needs and resources available in order to develop a proposed prioritised plan. The plan is then reviewed and agreed with the management. Instances where action is required, but resources are not available, are referred up the management chain. The emphasis is on achieving optimum long term efficiencies and improvements, rather than temporary solutions

All follow-up plans include the clear assignment of responsibility.

The following are applied in order to ensure that company policy and the concept of safety and environmental excellence and continuous improvement is understood, actively promoted through leadership and sound management practices, and applied at all levels in the organisation:

  • Management is committed to improve standards and engages and promote the levels of awareness that such standards demand. Training is essential to achieve this.
  • All work is properly supervised with safety and environment protection, forming an integral part of all planning and procedures and establish safeguards against all identified risks.
  • All incidents of, a serious or potentially serious nature, are investigated and recommendations communicated through line management, where appropriate.
  • Ship / shore communication links and procedures are established, to capture best practice and near miss incidents. Best practices should be actively promoted throughout the fleet.
  • Management encourages active participation of all personnel in applying the SMS and responds positively to recommendations that identify the changes in policy, practices or equipment necessary in order to improve the standard.
  • Management uses its best endeavours to ensure that contractors who are working on their behalf, apply the same quality standards.

All company personnel is expected to be familiar with the policy and to be able to describe what safety and environmental excellence means in practice. Compliance with the policy and implementation of the SMS is verified continuously:

  • Senior Management demonstrates and documents its commitment to safety and environmental excellence through activities such as chairing management reviews, reviewing non-conformities, monitoring the effectiveness of internal audits, etc.
  • Senior Officers and shore-personnel boarding the vessels lead by example in safety related issues, e.g. by wearing the correct personal protective equipment.
  • Shore personnel, through their visits onboard the vessels, meetings with ships staff, seminars, drills etc. measure the understanding of the concept for safety and environmental excellence.

At every level throughout the Company, the management drives the organisation forward and strives to improve performance.

  • Communicating the importance of meeting the customers' as well as the statutory and regulatory requirements within the organization, and ensuring these requirements are understood.
